Counties and cities in California face the ragged fact of the state’s $25 billion budget deficit and potential local impacts. So, horizon_airplanewhen Mammoth officials tried again for a Mono County commitment for summer/fall air service subsidy, they got nowhere.

Officials said Mono County, like all others, is up against the wall with the state budget and anxiety over obligations in the next three or four months. The Mono Supervisors did agree to form a subcommittee on the air service subsidy issue. Supervisors Hap Hazard and Byng Hunt will handle that.

Hunt said it’s an equity issue. How much will the County get out of the subsidy. He said the Town and Ski Area will receive more benefit. “We want to be a player,”
said Hunt but it is a question of equity. We’ll wait until we have more information on our finances,” he said.

The Mono Board made no commitment and looked nervously at the $230,000 subsidy or perhaps $280,000. Supervisor Hazard pointed to needs in his district like paramedics in Chalfant, now impacted by the loss of an ambulance in Bishop. Other supervisors also balked at the commitment.
