MLPD PRESS RELEASE:
On Wednesday, May 8, the newest (sort of) member of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) was sworn in by Town Clerk Jamie Gray. Retired Sergeant Karen Smart becomes the first MLPD Reserve Officer in many years.
Karen retired at the end of 2011, but has been volunteering since then by working in the property room to reduce the backlog of evidence. When the Police Department announced that it was reestablishing a Reserve Corps to help offset the loss of seven officers, Karen volunteered to be the first Reserve.
Reserve Officer Smart will be coordinating the Police Department’s Volunteer Program, scheduled to be presented to the Town Council on June 5. She will also be working some special events like the Fourth of July Parade.
Police Chief Dan Watson said, “It’s great to have Karen back in the family. She never really left us, but now she’s officially part of the MLPD again.”
Anyone interested in learning more about the MLPD Reserve Program should contact the Police Department at (760) 934-2011.

Maybe instead of ideas like raising money for street signs, the town council would consider funding an effective tool that documents the use and needs of current / future officers?
Awesome Karen good for you! You should seriously consider running for sheriff as well! At least you know what honor and integrity really is!!!!! Honor to the corps and Semper fi! Loyal fan!!!
whatcha gonna do when they come for you………….cry like a baby
Congrats Karen…the perfect person for the job!
We are both interested in working in the MLPD volunteer program, so put us on your list. 🙂

So called “bouncers” at bars and taverns can be a big problem….some come across as Law Enforcement, and some aren’t as tough as they think they are…In my old drinking days,I’ve seen more than one “bouncer” get his butt handed to him on a platter by someone you’d least expect to be doing it.One time,a bouncer asked someone to leave, the 2 guys left, the bouncer followed them out into the parking lot harrassing them…next thing I knew the “bouncer” was getting bounced big time by the both of them.
Mammoth’s problem is bartenders over serving idiots.
So maybe we should stop selling our town to idiots who drink too much???
Way to go Smart!!…………..Trouble your an idiot
Guess I deserve that Brian. I don’t really mean to bad mouth Mrs. Smart, I’m actually glad they are getting volunteers. I just get tired of watching politicians over spend on every thing they can get away with.
Good job Karen! You need to run for sheriff 2014! We really need a honest one!
Get Smart in 2014 !!!
Mammoth doesn’t need more police, just a few more bouncers and a few less cry babies.
So much for all the negative remarks about reserve officers…this is exactly what the PD needs, experienced, veteran cops, steppin’ up, donating their time and expertise for the community .
WAY TO GO, SARGE !
Yep, expect people to donate their time to accomplish necessary public services because others are too cheap to pay for the work to be done.
I believe this program was a town council brain fart Desert Tortoise. Business subsidizes and marketing is the priority till they get voted out of office.
