Last week, Matthew Wilson began his first year of teaching at Home Street Middle School. Matthew was recently chosen by the Knowles Science Teaching Foundation (KSTF) as a member of its 2014 cohort of Teaching Fellows. The selected Fellows participated in a rigorous screening process. With only 18 percent of the applicant pool being chosen, the 2014 Teaching Fellows are some of the most exceptionally talented early-career teachers in the nation.

Matt is committed to teaching secondary science in the U.S. Raised in Ojai, Calif., Matt graduated from Thacher School in 2001. He holds a Master of Science in wildlife biology from the University of Montana. Additionally, he holds a Bachelor of Arts in literature, a Bachelor of Science in biological sciences and a biology teaching credential from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

KSTF seeks to improve STEM education by building a stable, sustainable cadre of networked leading teachers, who are trained and supported as leaders from the beginning of their careers. The KSTF Teaching Fellows Program—the Foundation’s signature program—offers stipends, funds for professional development, grants for teaching materials, and opportunities for leadership development and mentoring for early-career STEM teachers through a comprehensive five-year Fellowship. With an emphasis on inquiry and collaboration, the Teaching Fellows Program empowers participants to advance their teaching practice and student learning, while leading from the classroom.
