Title: The Magnificent Mathletes 24/25 Season

After four JV meets and six Varsity meets, the end of the school year marks the end of the Mathletes season. This year has been incredible for the Mathletes as both teams finished in first place! The JV team ended their season with 73 points! Their score is over double Boron’s third place score of 35 and 11 points ahead of Rosamond’s second place score of 62. The Varsity team ended their season at an incredible 212 points! Their score was 31 points ahead of Tehachapi’s second place score of 181 points and was way more than the combined scores of the remaining three teams. This is a monumental victory that the Coach DeeDee Buchholz “has never seen in my years of coaching,” making this season a historic one.

Many individual Mathletes had amazing seasons and placed within the top ten in the League overall. In the Varsity team, these mathletes are Seniors Cooper Beard in first with 48 points, Ellie Crall in second with 42 points, Alyssa Buchholz in third with 41 points, Jodie Bedore in fifth with 35 points, and Junior Bryce Cokeley in eighth with 26 points. In addition to the top scorers, the Seniors Hunter Dermody, Jordan Lemons, and Sydney Norcross also had exceptional final seasons, surpassing their scores from previous years. We will greatly miss all the graduating Mathletes and wish them good luck in their future endeavors. Junior Captains Caleb Fitt and Sydney Wilson and their fellow Varsity team Juniors, Josef Borow, Taylor Currie, Kano Graves, Donovan Mondragon, Teagan Orr, Ari Rager, and Ben Rowan, also had amazing first Varsity seasons and will carry their momentum into next season.

In the Junior Varsity team, numerous students placed in the League Top Ten. These students are Freshman Santi Lopez in third place with 17 points and Sophomores Clare Haverstock in fourth with 16 points, Bram Crall in fifth with 14 points, Granite Puhvel in seventh with 10 points, and Ruby Vandehoven in eighth with 9 points. Other than these top placers, Sophomore Captain Adan Perez, Scarlett Buchholz, Reagan Dermody, Sydney Garcia, Amaya Hays, Tatum Swanson, Wayland Schultz, Alexis Solorio, and Freshman Kevin Rivas also had incredible second seasons or amazing Mathletes debuts.

The Mathletes Awards Ceremony was held on Monday, June Second! The room was filled to the brim with celebrating parents, siblings, friends, and community members, as many awards and congratulations were passed out. Some highlights include the “Sweet as Pi” award given to Hunter Dermody, Jodie Bedore, Ellie Crall and Taylor Currie, a “Mathletes 4-Ever” award given to Alyssa Buchholz, Cooper Beard, and Sydney Norcross for being a Mathlete for 4 years, and the “Absolute Value” award given to Teagan Orr and Adan Perez for always being super positive.

All the Mathletes give a huge thank you to LADWP for supporting the teams with supplies, gear, incentives, love, and encouragement. LADWP’s generosity in supporting the teams for the last two years has greatly helped in improving and growing our program. We would also like to thank the BUSD staff, BUHS Administrators Erik Forsman and Corinne Quintana for their support and encouragement, the Foundation for Excellence for their contributions to our club and their support, and the parent drivers and volunteers who make traveling to competitions possible. Without the support of the community, the Mathletes teams, as they are now, would not be possible. Thank you all very much!

On the topic of the 2024 to 2025 Mathletes season and the Mathletes club, Coach DeeDee Buchholz adds, “This year I was elected by the League to be League President, so I’ve been busier than ever with Mathletes…stuff. I love this program and believe whole-heartily in the benefits for students when they get involved in clubs and sports, so I’m happy to help provide a safe, fun, academic and friendly environment for these kids. Go Mathletes and way to go Bishop Mathletes for putting us on the map with your top notch math skills!”
