The big legal dispute that threatens the Town of Mammoth remains the Hot Creek lawsuit appeal. Attorneys will spend more money on that process and may go to oral arguments in the fall. The Town will also spend more cash on the cases of two mltc_7-7-10police officers.

At a recent Town Council meeting, officials noted that they would carry over some $400,000 into the new fiscal year from the old budget to help cover legal expenses.

In one instance, former Police Officer Erick Hugelman has appealed his termination. In another case, Officer Dan Casabian has appealed disciplinary actions. The Town is paying for a special legal counsel, Christine Kwong, to defend the Town’s position in the ongoing administrative hearings of these cases.

It was earlier alleged that Hugelman and Casabian had been involved in some type of altercation in Las Vegas and then at Rusty’s Bar in Bishop.

Town Manager Rob Clark explained that last year’s budget included some $700,000 or more for legal expenses. Clark said the Town did not spend all of that money and so carried over $400,000.
