A driver who fell asleep at the wheel and an unseat-belted passenger led to a highway death in Southern Inyo.chp_logo

The CHP reported that Cristine Dauwalter, 53 of Panorama, CA was at the wheel of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pick-up. Her passenger was Jan May Dauwalter, 83, also of Panorama. CHP officers said that the driver fell asleep and drifted into the center divide. The driver, officers said,w as alerted and tried to correct the truck back onto the roadway.

Instead, the truck overturned several times, which caused Jan Dauwalter, who was not wearing her seat belt, to be completely ejected. both driver and passenger were rushed to Southern Inyo Hospital with major injuries. Jan Dauwalter did not survive.
