MAMMOTH MOUNTAIN, CA – It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the Mammoth Mountain Ski Patroller, Claire Murphy, who was hospitalized last Friday, passed away as a result of her injuries.
INCIDENT STATEMENT: At approximately 11:30 AM on Friday, February 14, two Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrollers were caught in an avalanche on Lincoln Mountain. The slide occurred during avalanche mitigation work in an area called “The Avy Chutes,” following a significant Sierra snowstorm, where approximately 6 feet of snow fell in 36 hours.
Numerous Mammoth Mountain Ski Patrollers were on site immediately to assist with rescue efforts, using beacon technology to locate the individuals. One patroller was recovered at the scene uninjured, a second patroller was transported to Mammoth Hospital with serious injuries and later flown out of the area for further care.
Due to weather conditions, the area was closed to the public at the time of the incident. The resort was in very limited operations with only two chairlifts open and was closed for the remainder of the day at 12:00 PM.
