Inyo County Animal Shelter Thoughts
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Office is aware of recent posts regarding our Animal Shelter and euthanized dogs. While we do not engage in online debates, we want to provide clarity. California’s Hayden Act (Food & Agricultural Code § 31108, § 31754, and § 17005) requires shelters to report overall adoption, transfer, and euthanasia numbers, but does not mandate disclosure of an individual animal’s medical history or specific reasons for euthanasia.
Inyo County Animal Shelter works closely with outside agencies and rehabilitation facilities for animals, carefully exploring every possible avenue to achieve the best possible outcome. No one working in animal care wants to make the decision to euthanize an animal. Such decisions are only made after all options have been thoroughly considered and are taken with care, and only when necessary to prevent suffering or ensure community safety.
Our priority is, and will continue to be, the well-being of the animals in our care and the safety of the community we serve.
