Governor Newsom Declares January 7 a Day of Remembrance for Los Angeles Fire Victims

SACRAMENTO — California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially proclaimed January 7, 2026 as a Day of Remembrance to honor the victims and communities affected by the devastating Los Angeles wildfires that erupted one year ago. In his proclamation, Newsom ordered that flags at all state buildings be flown at half-staff in recognition of the lives lost and the ongoing recovery efforts.

The remembrance marks the anniversary of the Eaton and Palisades fires, which tore through Malibu, Altadena, Pacific Palisades, and surrounding areas in January 2025, destroying neighborhoods and claiming 31 lives. The governor’s statement emphasized both mourning for those who perished and appreciation for first responders, community leaders, and residents who continue to rebuild amid lingering grief.

In his proclamation, Newsom reaffirmed the state’s commitment to stand with affected families “until recovery is complete, homes are rebuilt, and lives are restored as fully as possible,” and highlighted the resilience and unity shown in the wake of the fires.
