Friends of the Inyo to Host Backcountry Film Festival in Bishop & Mammoth Jan. 26 & 27, to Benefit SnowSchool. Tickets Are on Sale Now!
Tickets Are on Sale for the 19th Annual Backcountry Film Festival Hosted by Friends of the Inyo in Bishop, Jan. 26, and in Mammoth, Jan. 27. Proceeds will benefit Snow School for Local Fifth Graders.
Local conservation nonprofit Friends of the Inyo (FOI) is bringing back the Backcountry Film Festival in 2024. The public is invited to join FOI in Bishop or Mammoth Lakes for a night full of winter-inspired stories on film selected by the Winter Wildlands Alliance (WWA).
The event will take place as follows:
In Bishop, at the Bishop Twin Theater, 237 N. Main St., from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday,
January 26, and
In Mammoth Lakes, at the U.S. Forest Service Welcome Center, 2510 Main St.,
from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, January 27.
According to the WWA website, winterwildlands.org, “The Backcountry Film Festival manifests the power of humans and their spirit. We screen cinematic stories of outdoor stewardship, grassroots policy and advocacy work, backcountry adventure, and snow cinema by human-powered advocates, athletes, brands, activists, adventures, and outdoor enthusiasts.”
The 19th Annual Backcountry Film Festival lineup features short films about athletic pursuits in the mountains, artistic vision, friendship, and how the snow-sports community is adapting to change. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online at FriendsoftheInyo.org/Events.
All proceeds from the festival, which besides ticket sales will include the sale of local brews on tap and raffle tickets for items from generous local sponsors, will help fund SnowSchool, an outdoor education program offered free of charge to local elementary schools by Friends of the Inyo in partnership with the Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association and using the WWA SnowSchool curriculum.
Friends of the Inyo’s Stewardship Director, Lindsay Butcher, described the program this way: “SnowSchool is an outdoor classroom that gets kids outside and playing in, learning about, and interacting with their local snowy environments. It is a hands-on learning experience that ignites their curiosity and creativity. The smiles of joy and discovery on the faces of SnowSchool students are priceless!”
Indeed, Inyo and Mono County fifth graders all bundled up in puffy jackets, mittens, and hats learn how to strap on snowshoes, then have fun romping around in the snow as they dig snow shelters, study snow crystals, and learn about their watershed, including snow-to-water ratios.
“Once we get a deep enough base layer (fingers crossed for some substantial snow sometime soon!) we will be hosting SnowSchool in Aspendell at Cardinal Village in the Bishop area, and in Mammoth at the USFS Welcome Center,” Butcher said.
Questions about the Backcountry Film Festival or SnowSchool may be directed to FOI Stewardship Director Lindsay Butcher at [email protected].

Here is the description of Snow School:
“Since the beginning of the program in 2017, we’ve gotten 450 Mammoth and Bishop fifth-graders out to don snowshoes, dig snowpits, calculate snow/water equivalence, learn about how the critters and trees adapt to life in a harsh winterscape, and of course, play!”
Knowing how and why to dig and understand a snow pit may save a kid’s life, calculating snow/water equivalence uses math skills, natural adaptations to winter are both fascinating and inspiring and snowshoeing (or skiing) is an excellent way to exercise in a snowy climate.
Apparently Ask A Parent thinks teaching kids snow safety skills, practical math and science as well as encouraging exercise outdoors is “communism”.
There is no cure for what she has, is there.
Excellent cause!
Cool flicks!
Smelly foulness of body odor and patchouli oil.
They changed location to your house? I’m in!
FOES of the Inyo strike again. Yup, indoctrinate them with communist propaganda while they are supposed to be having fun in the outdoors.
Ask a Parent
If it weren’t for FOI and other groups helping our OV environmen , and helping keep the big-money land-grabbing mining and development companies from coming here to trample on the land and Wildlife ,we’d soon be finding ourselves living in a high populated money-grabbing area much like some see when they have to travel down south not that far away…
If you like that sort of thing and area…..go for it….
define communist
mono resident
I doubt he can or will…
Think it’s only kinda saying what he’s been told to say,and somehow, someway making some kind of political statement with it.
And looky there,he’s even got one of those silly,trying-to-insult nicknames to go along with it.
Isn’t that the way it goes nowdays with a lot of things ?
“If you don’t agree with me or those that I support what I’m being told to do and say, that alone makes you a communist “…
We see it everyday, everywhere, with a lot of things, but I do think this is a first saying FOI is a communist organization and trying to indoctrinate their propaganda and beliefs onto our children…
Really ?
pretty sure that ask a parent is a she
In this case a group of elitists who attempt to indoctrinate children with leftist propaganda, probably climate change propaganda. Get the kids to tell their parents that if they don’t stop using propane and wood to heat that the snow will melt forever and never return. Of course, you probably believe that too, so no point in trying to explain reality to you folks who believe that stuff like its religion. I am looking forward to the next ice age.
Ask a Parent
All things you say, political conspiricies you hear on FOX NEWS or NewsMax,which means a whole lota lies and untruths
FOI, hardly a communist’leftist organization, just because they wouldn’t and don’t agree with the “drill, baby,,drill “BS, you hear, see, believe, and of course, agree with every word of it…or the measures FOI take and try to convey, more to life on earth than billionaires and billionaire companies running wild and free over the Wildlife, environment
,National Parks and Wilderness Areas…
Think you might be living in the wrong place and area.
Have you ever checked out, maybe the Lancaster area,or farther south to move to and live …or maybe the price of homes in Texas or Florida ?
You Dennis-one, do not know anything about me.
Nope – words have meaning, sweetie and you clearly haven’t any idea what the meaning of communism is. Here – I’ll give you a clue – it has absolutely nothing to do with climate change, wood, propane or snow. I’d teach you a little more but there really is no point in trying to explain literacy to you folks who spew made up garbage like you are the brightest star in the universe.
How ’bout that “advanced” science degree you claimed you have? I know elementary school kids who know the real definition of communism. Did you even make it to high school?
Oh yeah, by the way, sweetie, I use propane and wood to heat my home because I know that the production and storage of electricity is not an answer for several reasons. Your bigoted assumptions do not flatter you – never have and never will. Here, I’ll do you the courtesy of passing on what my grandma said, “it is better to remain silent and appear a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Why are you so full of hate ? Does the program ask a parent if their kid(s) can participate ? If yes, and the parent says “sure” then there’s not a problem and you need to keep your nose out of it.
Why are you such a fool? Most parents will say yes without investigating the curriculum being offered because they trust the school district. But nowadays the leftist agenda is pushed by the schools. BTW, I don’t see any hate in my comment. I dislike Friends of the Inyo, a majority of them are not local, I don’t think its right that the USFS, etc. allows them to act as an arm of the federal government. They are not worth hating. You obviously hate anyone with an opinion different than yours. You aren’t worth hating either. Just another mealy-mouthed snowflake.
Also, what goes on in the Public schools is everyone’s business, whether we like it or not. My tax dollars go there. I don’t want to see propaganda there either. Education, not indoctrination. Recall Inyo 350’s impassioned pleas to force all the school kids to where masks.
Your post implies that you are a spokesperson for “most parents” yet you have NOTHING to prove your statements in your post. All of the Board Members of Friends of the Inyo are locals and have been embedded in our community for many years. Volunteers with this organization are active in helping maintain our public lands and trails, no doubt which you feel free to use. Of course, you should freely use our public lands but maybe you should consider that there are kind people who volunteer, give their free time, to actively keep trails cleared, clean, free of trash. That’s a nice perk for you. So what if some members are not locals ? They are no doubt people who like to come to the area to recreate, and help sustain OUR local economy, and they appreciate what Mother Nature has given us. Teaching kids about their environment is communist propaganda ? You still can’t explain how you came up with that, can you? Can you explain exactly how Friends of the Inyo “acts as an arm of the federal government?”
What I do recall is that you and your Eastside Local “Choose Freedom Not Fear” anti-mask / anti-vax clan gleefully shared your collective nescience and lack of intellect throughout the pandemic while a million-plus people died. “Where masks” ? Really? “Mealy-mouthed snowflake?” That statement doesn’t even make any literal (or metaphorical) sense. Check your 3rd grade grammar and spelling skills.
BTW, the definition of hate is “to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest”
I beg to differ, FOES Board is mostly non-local, as is their staff, look it up. Second, I don’t have to prove anything, for all you know I am an AI troll, but at least I have some minor intelligence. Seems all you can do is call names when someone doesn’t agree with your OBVIOUSLY SUPERIOR BRAIN. Maybe you are a AI Bot planted by the CCP.
No, the staff and board are mostly locals. at least 7 of the 8 staff are locals, and 4 of 6 board members are locals. I haven’t called you any names. I asked why you have so much hate, and I’ve pointed out your ignorance, but that’s not calling you names. Ignorance is only due to lack of knowledge, which is typically due to lack of education, or often also due to the environment in which one was raised, e.g., parental influence. And both of these are often due to lack of resources, often financial in nature, or, sometimes lack of motivation to learn. Having minor intelligence is a good thing, but it also indicates that you have room to grow and learn.
You are too kind. Voluntary ignorance is a thing. You know – like offering a made up definition of communism when just about every computer I have ever seen provides access to a dictionary.
It’s interesting to think about: education takes effort. Beyond the point where a high school education is “mandated” what motivates someone to continue learning ? Especially to pursue learning just for the sake of it ? I heard a comment recently along the lines of “I don’t understand science so it’s just easier not to believe any of it.” This came from a comedian, and it was hysterical in context, but as an afterthought, it is really so true for many.
Seems like you detest me Kay, or the me you are arguing with. I brought up Inyo 350 protest as an example of people with no children in school getting involved with school policy. And of course you know I am, a Free Eastsider, you just osmosis it straight from the ether to your tiny pea brain.
Finally, do you know one person that DIDN’T get covid after being vaxed? Wearing a mask, being homeschooled, etc. I don’t. That is because none of those things worked to stop the spread of the disease, as your own statistic shows.
Ask a Parent
When COVID hit,I got vaxed…..and wore a mask, more out of respect for others than anything else..I did the “social distancing” thing…and avoided people that did get COVID…
All comman sense things to do during a pandemic that killed lots of people and made millions sick…
And not just obeying the “marching orders” that some politician was putting out there, claiming by wearing a mask, getting a vaccine and social distancing was “taking our freedoms” away..
And guess what ?
I never got COVID,but knew many that did,and had a real good friend that opposed all the COVID restrictions that ended up dying from COVID….
I don’t know you so I can’t detest you. Using your argument, do you oppose someone being on the BUSD Board who does have children but none of them attend schools in the BUSD ?
I know several people, all of whom were vaccinated, all of whom wore masks throughout the pandemic, that did NOT get Covid (they also have not gotten the flu, RSV, pneumonia, or “the common cold” for the past 3 years). They did not hide in their homes for 3 years, they all work full-time in public sector jobs, continued to work full-time during the pandemic (front-line essential workers), face-to-face with the public daily. They could still easily breathe and did not succumb to CO2 poisoning !! They continue to be healthy and happy. I personally know 3 people who died from Covid, they were not vaccinated and did not wear masks. I know 2 people who are currently dealing with long covid.
Your statement “…none of those things worked to stop the spread of the disease, as your own statistic shows” only confirms that you either have a misunderstanding of statistical analysis, or you continue to choose, like many other “anti-vaxxers” / anti-maskers, to misuse statistical inference.
Here is an everyday example that might help you understand: by law we are required to wear seatbelts; the reason is to try to prevent deaths / injury from motor vehicle accidents. However, it is known that people still die or (sometimes) sustain life-altering injuries from motor vehicle accidents even if they are wearing seatbelts. Given your method of analysis, it would seem reasonable for you to stop wearing your seatbelt, stop having your kids wear seatbelts, and be a vocal advocate for eliminating all seatbelt laws including those requiring kids under 8 years old to be in car seats.
One other thing, osmosis is a noun.
Your constant name calling is a fine demonstration of your ability to think, communicate and behave like an adult But please, by all means, carry on. As I’ve heard said – no one is useless – they can always serve as a bad example.
follow your own advice and stop using the patronizing and sexist ‘sweetie’ when addressing aap . . .
Finally, I would use my real name, but I was threatened with swatting and other unpleasantness by one of your comrades.
Ask a Parent
Fake news…
Your “comrades” are the ones that DO that kind of swatting things, with that conspiricy theory stuff…kinda like it was the Democrats and Liberals that actually did the J6 riot on the capitol building dressed as trump supporters, and not the angry whiny trump worshipers doing it.
HAHAHAHAHA! But intelligent people don’t make threats. Maybe it was one of your “comrades”?
thank you, AAP, for periodically bravely emerging from your bunker to post these diatribes. How else would rational people gain insight into the anti-science, nativist, terrified mindset of those who fear everything they don’t understand, believe being born in a place gives them some sort of privileged status (and especially over those whose ancestors have been here thousands of years, who are somehow less native than the states-rights people, go figure), whose semi-literacy makes them feel qualified to censor what others can read, and whose belief in their absolute, god-given right to do and say whatever they want makes them eager to outlaw any behaviors that threaten their sense of self? This is a real public service you’re providing here, Ask-a-Parent: it’s mighty white of you.
Well, when you folks are talking about indigenous peoples having more rights than others…..
Name one
Ask a Parent
When students were required to wear masks,it was during COVID….when it was common sense for ALL people to do it…
The only people that didn’t or tried to find fault in doing that was the people playing “follow their leader” and their political cult ,boss telling and ordering them not to,saying it was the Government “taking our freedom away” from maybe catching COVID, during a pandemic where you could get sick and die, like we ALL knew a person or two that did just that…
You hit the nail on the head. These mealy-mouthed indoctrinated parents will say yes to anything.
We need to form a group of uber-parents like ourselves to reeducate them. They’ll just give us power of attorney until that process is complete. How about we call ourselves Cooperative Collective Committee of Parents.
Cooperative Collective Committee of Parents. That is brilliant ! Let’s wage on how high that flies over the head of our comrade AAP. LOL.
Kay is smarter than thee, or me!
And in case you were wondering, yes, I have solar panels and drive an EV. 🙂
” You obviously hate anyone with an opinion different than yours.”
Sweetie – you may want to use the search engine of your choice to look up the definition of the terms “psychological projection” – unless, of course, you don’t care that you reveal a lot about yourself with every insult you hurl at someone else.
