Press release

Bishop, CA – Friends of the Inyo invites everyone to join us to kick off a busy summer season with our Welcome to Summer Open House. The Welcome to Summer Open House will take place at the Inyo Council for the Arts on Wednesday, June 14 from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

Public lands are a vital part of the economic and social vitality of the Owens Valley, and Friends of the Inyo works to ensure that the public lands of the Eastern Sierra remain intact and vibrant for future generations of people, plants, and wildlife. Our Welcome to Summer Open House is a great opportunity for everyone to hear about Outside on the Eastside, Friends of the Inyo’s collection of exciting summer programs, get updates on critical issues affecting our public lands, and to learn how they can get involved. Also, we’re excited to introduce new staff, including our Executive Director, Wendy Schneider.

Friends of the Inyo is ecstatic that Wendy Schneider has joined our organization as our new Executive Director. A native of East Tennessee, Wendy developed a love of the great outdoors in the Appalachian Mountains. Wendy’s career started in the environmental movement and has included practicing law, bringing a product to market for a start-up and founding a non-profit benefitting street children in India. Wendy has now found her way to paradise in the Eastern Sierra and fulfilled her desire to merge her professional skills with her passion for the environment.

Also joining Friends of the Inyo full time as the Stewardship Programs Manager is Julia Runcie. Julia lived in the Eastern Sierra for years and worked at the Mono Lake Committee and for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep program. Returning to the east side after receiving a Master’s of Science in Ecological Planning from the University of Vermont, we’re excited to have Julia guide Friends of the Inyo’s stewardship programs.

With a full summer of events and new, passionate staff like Wendy and Julia, it’s an exciting time locally for Friends of the Inyo and our public lands. With new executive policies swirling around seemingly daily that threaten and defund our public lands and their administering agencies, it’s also a critical time. Friends of the Inyo invites everyone to join us for our Welcome to Summer Open House to celebrate and support our public lands.
