flushotFlu season officially starts Friday, October 1, and health agencies have an idea of what to expect.

The Centers for Disease Control predicts that the H1N1 virus will continue to spread along with the regular seasonal viruses. The CDC says that the 2010 flu shot does offer protection against three different viruses, including H1N1 and Influenza B that causes seasonal flu outbreaks.

Physicians recommend that you get a flu shot as soon as possible, especially health care workers and parents of school-age children.

Locally, both the Inyo and Mono Health Departments have already offered flu shots in organized clinics that will continue into October.

Clinics for the week of October 4th go like this:

Inyo County Health Clinic, Monday on South St. in Bishop from 9am to noon and 4pm to 6pm. Tuesday, October 5th, Statham Hall in Lone Pine, 12:30pm to 5pm and Wednesday, October 6th, Independence Fire Department, 7pm to 8pm. Thursday, October 7th, Legion Hall, Big Pine, 9:30am to 11:30am.

In Mono County, the Health Department will hold a flu clinic at the Crowley Community Center Thursday, October 7th from 4pm to 7pm. Other clinics follow the next week.

Health officials say this year the supply of flu vaccine is plentiful. Vaccines are available to all ages with no restrictions. If you can’t make a county flu clinic, pharmacies and physicians will have the vaccine.
