Fire restrictions lift Friday, November 22

BISHOP, Calif., November 20, 2024 — Inyo National Forest fire management staff are lifting Stage I fire restrictions starting this Friday, November 22. This includes lands within Inyo National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management Bishop Field Office, where dispersed campfires on the ground will now be allowed, provided that the person obtains a current California Campfire Permit.

Although fuel moistures are still low in areas throughout the forest, other conditions are present that meet the criteria for lowering fire restrictions.

“While these conditions have reduced the potential for large fire growth, we still urge everyone to minimize wildfire potential when recreating on the forest,” said Chance Traub, Interagency Fire Management Officer for both the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. “Just because temperatures are dropping, wildfires can still happen as high winds increase these chances.”

Always remember:

  • Pacific Southwest Region fire restrictions remain in effect year-round such as the prohibition of possessing, discharging, or using fireworks or pyrotechnic devices.
  • A valid California Campfire Permit is still required.
  • Campfires must be supervised and controlled at all times. Only leave when fully extinguished. Abandoning a campfire is a citable offense (36 CFR § 261.5 d.).
  • Campfires must have minimum of 5-10 feet of flammable material cleared around it.

To reduce impacts to the landscape, if available, use of existing “rock rings” are preferred rather than creating new ones.
