Two months ago, we lived with lightning-sparked major fires near Independence, Big Pine and June Lake. Since then, we have fortunately dealt with only small, isolated fires, but officials warn that just because it’s cooler and we’ve had a little rain does not mean we are out of fire danger.

The Forest Service sent out a reminder that wildfire season is not over. Their statement is that hot and dry conditions are upon us again and fire danger remains high in the Eastern Sierra.

Fire restrictions are still in effect on the Inyo National Forest and BLM lands. The advice to hunters and other recreationists – continue to expect widespread public fire restrictions due to ongoing fire danger levels.

The restrictions generally ban open campfires and confine other activities to limited hours and locations. Jeff Iler, Deputy fire Management Officer said that weather forecasts suggest continued dry conditions so the fire restrictions and some outdoor recreation closures will likely extend beyond hunting season opener.

Officials also warn homeowners to remain aware and prepared – clearing brush and other fuels away from your buildings.
