A fire on Main Street Bishop led to a second, separate vehicle accident, when a responding fire truck collided with a sedan.

Just before noon Monday, the Bishop Volunteer firefighters were called out for a vehicle fire on Main Street. A white Ford Expedition, marked with Department of Water and Power insignia, had caught fire in front of Dennys. With smoke pouring out of the engine compartment, the firefighters went to work to put this fire out.

Bishop Fire Chief Ray Seguine reports that the DWP crew was on their way from LA to Pleasant Valley Reservoir. They had just pulled out from Schats when they spotted the smoke.

The firefighters had the fire down but not out, when Bishop Engine 7, a fast attack vehicle, and a white sedan collided. It appeared that the Bishop Fire vehicle was driving in the center turn lane with lights and blaring sirens to get around traffic. The white sedan looked like it was turning to cross Main Street when the accident occurred.

The fender bender was brief. Both cars pulled away from each other and the fire vehicle continued on to the scene. No one appeared to be injured in the accident. Chief Seguine explained that the white sedan had turned into Engine 7, hitting the right front tire. There was no visible damage to the fire truck.

The firefighters continued with their efforts to make sure the fire was completely out. Chief Seguine says that the fire caused by an electrical short in a wiring harness possibly related to an extra battery that had been added to the Expedition.
