Drivers to Experience 32 Lane Miles of Improved U.S. 395 Near Coso Junction

What you need to know: The Dunmovin Thin Blanket Project, funded by SB 1, will apply a thin blanket of asphalt to U.S. 395 from Haiwee Canyon Rd. to Coso Junction. One lane will remain open in both directions for the duration of the project.

INYO COUNTY — Drivers will soon experience better road conditions on U.S. 395 in southern Inyo County as Caltrans began construction today on the Dunmovin Thin Blanket Project. The primary focus of the $10 million-project is to improve the integrity and extend the life of the highway between Haiwee Canyon Rd. and Coso Junction.

Contractors will patch and repair more than 32 lane miles of the existing pavement before applying a hot-mix asphalt overlay. The combined overlay and patch work will create a smooth consistency in the pavement that will require less maintenance moving forward and extend its service life by up to 15 years.

Work on the Dunmovin Thin Blanket Project is scheduled to take place Monday through Thursday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Fridays from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Crews expect the project to last 45 working days. During construction, traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction.

FUNDING INFORMATION: The $10.027 million contract for the Dunmovin Thin Blanket Project was awarded to Granite Construction and is fully funded by Senate Bill (SB) 1, the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017. SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually split between the state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1. TRAFFIC IMPACT: During work hours, at least one lane will remain open in each direction through the project and drivers may experience brief delays. The speed limit will be reduced to 55 mph through the construction area.

Work schedules are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment or materials, or any construction-related issues.

Travelers are urged to be attentive to workers on the highway, slow for the cone zone, and move over whenever possible to remain clear of construction personnel and equipment. Be Safe and Be Work Zone Alert!
