– Press release from Tri-County Fair
The Bishop Volunteer Fire Department’s Destruction Derby for 2015 is in jeopardy. This long standing crowd favorite is a mainstay of the Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fair, and it needs the support of the Eastern Sierra Communities.
“As of Friday, July 10 there were not enough entries to have a Destruction Derby this year. So, the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department and the Tri-County Fair are pulling together and asking the fans to help save the event,” commented Fair CEO Sally Symons.
“For some reason entries are down, and several regular drivers lost sponsorship this year. We know this is a crowd favorite, and are asking the communities of the Eastern Sierra to help out. Consider entering a car or even helping to sponsor one,” said Symons.
Besides being the highlight of the Fair for many, the Destruction Derby is a huge fundraiser for the Fire Department and the Fair as well. Symons continued, “By providing this great night of all-American entertainment to the fans, both organizations benefit financially, helping to make their year round services and activities available.” In 2014 the Fire Department’s portion of the proceeds was $34,000.00 and the Fair received just under that amount at $30,000.00.
Those interested in entering the Derby or getting in touch with a driver to help sponsor a car should contact the Bishop Volunteer Fire Department at 760-873-5485.

This is the beginning of the end for the Derby. Sooner or later all those full size carbureted cars will be extinct. Thats why they have been trying new ideas like mini cars and trucks. The fair grounds and fire dept. need to start looking for other ideas real soon.
