Crowley Lake Current Fishing Conditions
|
- The general consensus in the area is the fish population in Crowley Lake is in trouble. Many local guides pulled their boats out of the lake early and/or have stop taking clients on the lake. Some are finding no fish for the first time in years of guiding the lake, most often only a couple fish per client per day is what they are seeing.
- It seems like several factors might be at play over the past few years to cause this decline in fish, some obvious, other not so much. An article in a local paper called The Sheet discussing the issue in detail last year. It only seems to have gotten worse since then.
- During the 2020 season the region was loaded with folks escaping to the mountains and traffic was high on the lake. It is likely the number of fish taken that year was far greater than an average season.
- Bacteria infections at local hatcheries in the past three years have impacted the number of fish being planted. The number of fish planted every year has seen a dramatic decrease since then.
- This year’s heavy snow and ice on the lake may have caused a fish kill. We are discussing this with a Fish and Wildlife Biologist to determine the likelihood of this phenomenon.
- There are also natural losses that occur with planted fish. Birds know it an easy meal when the stock trucks arrive and they tend to congregate in the area for a feast.
- Your input is welcome. We are asking all interested parties to mail a letter stating their personal experience as to how bad the lake has been depleted of fish and asking for emergency action by the CA DFW to:

How about planting the fish in different locations instead of the same old launch ramp spots where the birds of prey hang and wait.
Has the DFG (OOPS) , DFW , even considered matching what the reg’s. are up at Heenan Lake…C&R only ? Surely the money-laden tourists from down south AND the local experts could be satisfied with just taking home photo’s of their quest’s for just one season , for the greater good ?
Rick
Sadly,99 % of our tourists don’t even know how to properly catch-and-release in order to keep the Fish alive…never mind the fact, the Fish they’re supposed to catch-and-release aren’t really caught and released, and end up in their coolers, unless there’s a DFW officer standing next to them.
Hmmm.. plenty of locals do the exact things you mentioned too. It’s not always tourists, even though they may be the majority of offenders.
At the risk of being laughed at, I have seldom caught trout out of Crowley, although I can say I am a pretty good fisher. The perch there fear me. DFG not stocking fish and/or stocking fish that can’t breed is probably part of the problem. In Montana you have to release the big brooders but can retain smaller fish. As the people say fishing is fishing, it isn’t called catching.
How about we close the lake to fishing for a year or two and give the fish a chance to rebound and reevaluate at that time?
Or we can be the greedy selfish humans that we are and keep it open till there are no more fish.

Simple answer to that…..
Sadly,no…..because of the tourists and their $$$….
