The following press release was issued by Bishop Union High School Superintendent Barry Simpson:

The administration of BUHS and the Bishop Unified School District were forced to make the decision to forfeit the CIF Soccer Championship game scheduled on Saturday, February 27th.  Violations of the athletic code of conduct by multiple members of our girls soccer team occurred. It is with regret that this decision had to be made at the end of what has been a very successful athletic campaign.  This difficult decision was made to protect the integrity and tradition of Bronco athletics. BUHS  will continue to hold student athletes to the highest standards of conduct and sportsmanship in the  pursuit of victory with honor.

From the Fresno Bee:

Bishop High has forfeited the Central Section Division V girls soccer title to Fowler because it didn’t have enough players to field a team following a disciplinary incident.

Section Commissioner Jim Crichlow on Friday night said “several” Broncos players violated the school’s code of conduct while spending the night in a hotel following the team’s 2-0 victory over Orosi on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Bishop, the third seed, played at No. 7 Orosi because of section rules that require schools from the High Desert League to travel for playoff games.

The Broncos have an 18-player roster, according to Maxpreps, but only eight were available to play in the final, which had been scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday at top-seeded Fowler. Bishop (17-6-1) also was going to be without coach Manny Terrazas, Crichlow said.

The defending champion Redcats (22-3-1) were making their third straight appearance in the D-V final. Fowler lost to Sierra in 2014.

Fowler will be in contention to be one of the section’s automatic entrants into the CIF Southern California Regional playoffs. Pairings will be announced March 6.
