Every day, thousands of California children rely on school buses to get to and from school safely. As drivers, it’s our responsibility to do our part.
When approaching a school bus, remember these key laws under the California Vehicle Code (CVC):
• Flashing yellow lights mean the bus is preparing to stop. Slow down and prepare to stop.
• Flashing red lights and an extended stop arm mean you must stop until the lights stop flashing.
• Drivers must stop in both directions when a school bus displays flashing red lights.
• Do not proceed until the red lights stop flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn.
• Exception: If the bus is on the other side of a divided or multiple-lane highway, you do not need to stop.
• Violations can result in fines up to $1,000 and possible driver’s license suspension for repeated offenses.
Let’s work together to keep children safe. Slow down, stay alert, and always stop for the flashing red lights.
