Carl Wayne Cox

May 23, 1939 – February 10, 2026

Carl “Wayne” Cox of Bishop, CA, passed away peacefully in his home on February 10th with his wife by his side. Wayne was born on May 23, 1939, in Stockton, CA, to parents Carl and Viola Cox. He attended Edison High School and Delta College in Stockton. After graduating, he went on to court reporting school in San Francisco. At this time in his life, he was a talented bowler and played the saxophone in a jazz band. While in college, Wayne met his wife, Vicki. They were married on December 14, 1963, in Stockton, sharing 65 loving years together.

Following his schooling, they moved to Bishop, adopted two daughters and Wayne began his career with the Inyo County Superior Court in Independence. At the courthouse, Wayne was known for his diligent stenographic work, friendly disposition, and his colorful and patterned ties. Wayne worked as a court reporter for 40 years until his retirement in 2004.

Throughout his life, Wayne was a sports fanatic. For many years, you could find him on the golf course, in the bowling alley, or in the stands watching his daughters and grandchildren play sports. His personal accolades include two 300 bowling games, one of them being the first 300 game bowled in Bishop, and two holes-in-one on the golf course. He dedicated thousands of hours to watching professional sports, studying player stats, and cheering for the Bishop Broncos football and volleyball teams. He also drove thousands of miles to make sure he didn’t miss his grandchildren’s games, camps, and even practices.

Wherever Wayne went, he easily made lasting friendships. He strived to make everyone laugh, gave generously, and forgave without hesitation as he saw the best in everyone he met. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He will be remembered for his kindness, patience, art, love of sports, fast cars, and colorful sense of style.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Viola Cox; his sister, Carla Lund; and extended family members from the Lodi and Stockton areas. He is survived by his loving wife, Vicki Cox; his daughters, Brandi Cox, and Tawni Thomson and her husband, Jeff; his granddaughter, Kiara LaBuff and her husband, Stone; his grandson, Corey Thomson and his wife, Lissy Thomson; his cherished great-grandchildren, Walker and Mackenzie Thomson; as well as many extended family members and treasured friends who will deeply miss him.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held later this year.
