Caltrans Aiming to Partially Reopen State Route 190 by October 15

 

DEATH VALLEY – Caltrans has revised its estimated reopening date for State Route 190 through Death Valley National Park following an assessment of the ongoing repairs. The highway has been closed since last month due to damage caused by Tropical Storm Hilary. With the repairs that have been completed so far, Caltrans is now targeting October 15 for a partial reopening of the highway from U.S. 395 in Lone Pine to Furnace Creek.

This reopening date depends on several factors, including future weather events and the availability of materials to fix the road. When this section of State Route 190 reopens, drivers should anticipate multiple 24-hour traffic control points where repair work is ongoing.

State Route 190 east of Furnace Creek to Death Valley Junction will remain closed beyond October 15 as emergency work continues to repair the heavily damaged portions of the highway. Caltrans is looking into options that will help mitigate damage from future storms to this flood-prone area.

State Route 190 between Olancha and State Route 136 will also remain closed beyond October 15 due to extensive damage. Drivers will need to use State Route 136 out of Lone Pine to access the park once State Route 190 partially reopens.
