Press release

Winter is just around the corner, and consumers buying firewood should be aware of the requirements for firewood sales in California to avoid being burned.  A cord is the only legal unit of measure for firewood sales unless the total amount of wood less than 1/8 cord, such as campfire bundles.

It is important for buyers to know exactly how much wood is in a cord.  A cord is equal to 128 cubic feet of COMPACTLY stacked wood, typically measuring 4’x4’x8’.  To determine the cubic feet contained in a stack of firewood, multiply the length by the width by the height.  Measurements taken in inches can be converted to cubic feet by dividing by 1,728.

In all sales of non-packaged wood, California regulations require the seller to furnish the buyer with a bill of sale, stating the amount of wood purchased, total selling price, the seller’s name and address, the buyers name and address, and the date of sale or delivery.

When buying wood over the telephone, make certain it is delivered by the cord measure and not a pickup load-full, and remember to pay only upon delivery.
