BrightSource develops and owns solar projects all over the world.

In the new year, a major solar project may unfold in far southern Inyo. Before Christmas, Inyo Supervisor Linda
Arcularius had reported to members of the Eastern Sierra Council of Governments that the major solar developer known as BrightSource apparently has plans.

Arcularius said that representatives of BrightSource met with the Inyo Supervisors during their Death Valley meeting. Arcularius said the company will “unveil plans for a large project in the very southern end of Inyo.” She had no other details.

What is known about BrightSource – the company website says they are developing more than 4 gigwatts of solar power projects in southwestern states – enough to power 1.4 million homes. The company says it has more than 2.6 gigawatts of power under contract, including wattage for Edison and PG&E.

BrightSource currently remains at work on the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in California’s Mojave Desert. Once constructed, this project claims to be the largest solar thermal project in the world.

Bishop’s Mayor Jeff Griffiths also mentioned that Cerro Coso Geothermal has an interest in solar but has concerns about transmission lines. The Eastern Sierra Council of Governments members agreed to place the issue of energy corridors and transmission lines on a future agenda. They may also invite representatives of BrightSource to speak.
