Two young athletes from Bishop made their mark at the 2025 California State Games in San Diego, held July 19–20 at the prestigious Triton Track & Field Stadium at UC San Diego. Competing in the shot put and discus events, brothers Wyatt and Levi Miears represented their hometown with strong performances against top athletes from across California and beyond.
The California State Games drew an estimated 81 teams from cities across the state—including Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, Fresno, Bakersfield, Oakland, San Francisco and Stockton—as well as out-of-state competitors from Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and Washington. The competition was fierce, but the Miears brothers rose to the challenge.
On Day 1, Wyatt Miears, a 15-year-old freshman at Bishop Union High School, competed in the 15–16 boys discus division. Despite feeling nervous, Wyatt delivered a winning throw of 132 feet, 2 inches. “I was hitting 140s in warm-ups but got nervous” he said. “I’m just happy to get the win.”
Meanwhile, his younger brother Levi Miears, 12-year-old, competed in his first-ever track and field competition in the 11–12 boys discus event. Levi placed an impressive 4th with a throw of 40 feet, 4 inches. One of his throws would have landed him in third place, but it was ruled out of bounds.
On Day 2, Wyatt returned to the ring for shot put and continued his dominance. His first attempt—taken as a conservative “safety throw” to secure a mark—measured 43 feet, 0.25 inches and ultimately held up as the winning throw. Wyatt’s next two throws were even farther by 5 to 6 ft but unfortunately scratched due to stepping out of ring. Nonetheless, he claimed first place in the 15–16 boys shot put.
Levi also competed in the 11–12 boys shot put, finishing 7th with a best throw of 20 feet, 10 inches—another strong performance for his first competitive outing.
Wyatt Miears not only won gold in both shot put and discus but was also honored as the Men’s Field Athlete of the Games. His victories earn him a coveted spot at the 2026 America Games, to be held at Penn State University next July, where he will compete in the 15–16 boys division on a national stage.
The Miears brothers’ performances brought pride to the Bishop community, showcasing the strength and potential of local youth athletes on a statewide—and soon, national—level.
