Bishop Union High School Counselor Christie Nesbit (shown above) had lunch with the Bishop Lions recently and was given the opportunity to speak on helping support the annual Lions Student Speakers Contest with recruiting BUHS students to take part in the Lions’ local contest, approaching January 21, 2026. This year’s speech topic is “Global Warming vs. Climate Change: Provide Your Thoughts” and is expected to encourage interested students from Bishop’s 4 high school or equivalent education level, including home schoolers, to compete locally first and then have winners from Lone Pine, Independence, Big Pine and Mammoth Lakes compete at zone and region level, earning scholarship stipends as the winner progresses. Ms. Nesbit and Corinne Quintana have been helpful to the Bishop Lions in asking for student recruits from BUHS for several years, and the wish is that the local schools will start now with helping students research subject material, write a personal speech most likely assisted by faculty coaching and AI, memorize their speech and be ready for the January 21st local level contest.
Interested students from any of the 4 local high schools or equivalent level including home schoolers, are invited to contact local contest Chair Harry Bhakta (760-920-3525) or co-chair Stan Smith (760-873-7826) for more information and forms necessary to indicate interest in competing. With the holidays fast approaching the Bishop Lions thought it wise to start recruiting earlier this year than usual, with the thought the holiday break would provide additional time for speech research, live practice with family and friends and holiday guests, getting over public speaking jitters in front of a mirror, and “performing” in front of the family dog or cat! ##

Bishop Police Officer Sgt. David Scobie (shown above) was a recent guest of the Bishop Lions to present this year’s plans for Shop-With-A-Cop, an annual community event staged by law enforcement officers from Bishop PD, Mammoth Lakes PD, Inyo and Mono County Sheriff personnel, Department of Fish & Wildlife law enforcement, CalFire personnel, and Bishop Paiute Tribal reservation police. The group creates a list of 50 needy local students and their families who are then guests of the law enforcement group for a fun day for the students of parading around the City of Bishop and the Tri-County Fairgrounds with red lights and sirens, assembling at the Tallman Pavilion at the fairgrounds for an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast served by the Bishop Lions and support personnel. Following a program conducted by the law group the students are then again are taken red lights and sirens shopping or back home. This year’s plans may get away from the use of shopping by credit or debit cards funded by the law group and doing actual shopping at local Bishop area stores.
For more information on details and contributing to the Christmas gift shopping program, please contact Officer David Scobie at Bishop PD. ##
