With three of the five current members of the Bishop City Council being women, it seems only fitting that they honored Linda Arcularius at their first Council meeting of 2015. Arcularius retired from public service at the end of December.

She had been Inyo County’s First District Supervisor for 21 years, first appointed to fill a vacancy on the board in 1993, and going on to win 5 elections, four of which were uncontested.

Councilwoman Karen Schwartz drew laughter when she confessed that she was only a teenager when Linda was first appointed to the Board of Supervisors, but then added, “You are someone to look up to.” She presented Arcularius with a City Tile.

Councilwoman Laura Smith presented her with a Certificate of Outstanding Community Service, noting that “You were particularly inspiring to me as a city councilwoman. I looked at you as a role model and I thank you for inspiring me.”

In presenting Arcularius with flowers, Councilman Joe Pecsi said, “Thank you for everything you have done for the County and for everything you have done for me personally over the years.”

Pecsi was followed by Mayor Pat Gardner, who embraced Arcularius and told her that, “We do appreciate you and all you’ve done. We have benefited from your public service.”

Arcularius, looking back over her years in public service, reminded the Council that it is “imperative that you work together.” She then noted the importance of good staff support, whether with the County or the City, singling out City Administrator Jim Tatum in particular, telling him, “Thank you for your service to the Fairgrounds, the County, and now with the City.” Tatum thanked her for the recognition and assured her that he would be calling on her for help. “I have a list,” he said.
Arcularius was not the only public servant recognized at the Council meeting as Former Councilmen Dave Stottlemyre and Keith Glidewell received flowers, a Bishop City Tile and Certificates of Recognition as well for their service to the City of Bishop.
