A Thrilling Fourth Session: CSI – Evidence, Records, and Path to Policing

By: Tyler Beadle

BISHOP, CA –

On October 23, 2025, the fourth session of the Third Bishop Community Police Academy pulled our nine-student class into the heart of crime scene investigation, police records, and officer training. Led by Sergeant Scobie, the evening featured presentations from BPD Police Services Technician A. Dondero, BPD Records Clerk V. Toy, and former BPD Lieutenant Josh Ellsworth, filling in for Chief Derr. Our binders, stuffed with notes and schedules, kept us on track, and I’m truly grateful for Sergeant Scobie, Chief Derr, and the team’s work in making this program for our community.

First, Dondero delivered a captivating presentation on crime scene investigation. She explained how technicians respond, either as first responders or when called to collect evidence, prioritizing what could crack a case. Dondero set up a mock crime scene, turning us into detectives: one classmate took photos, I logged names and entry times, and others scoured for clues like fingerprints or clothing fibers. Debriefing our choices was both fun and revealing, showing the gritty, daily reality of CSI in our small town. I snapped photos to share, capturing the hands-on thrill of Dondero’s lesson.

Next, Records Clerk V. Toy shared an awesome slideshow about her vital role. It’s no easy task—she manages sensitive records under strict legal codes, where one slip could mean big trouble. With a grin, she said she doesn’t look good in orange, highlighting the stakes. Toy showcased BPD’s 2025 traffic report system with Carfax, which streamlines the report requests for the public, boosting efficiency. Her talk underscored how precise records keep Bishop’s law enforcement running smoothly.

Finally, former Lieutenant Josh Ellsworth broke down the hiring, recruiting, and training process for officers. Engaging videos detailed the 24-week POST academy, where recruits tackle firearms, legal codes, and tactics, plus rigorous background checks, physical tests, and psychological exams to ensure readiness. Ellsworth called policing deeply rewarding and recommended it as a career. His passion sparked agreement from me, though my title insurance career keeps me grounded. Also, I love reporting the news in my free time for my beautiful readers.

The class ended around 9:15 p.m., loaded with insights. I really loved this session’s blend of action and behind-the-scenes knowledge, and I’m excited for next week. I hope readers share the enthusiasm for this program. For more information on the Bishop Police Department, this class, or future ones, contact them directly. Questions about my article or writing?
