A New Chapter for Bishop’s Chamber of Commerce

By: Tyler Beadle

Bishop residents, get ready for an exciting update on the future of the Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, currently housed in the iconic A-Frame building at 690 N. Main St. Recently, I sat down with 2025-26 Chamber President Robert Sharp over a laid-back lunch at Roadhouse to chat about the big changes ahead. The sun was just right, and the conversation flowed as easily as the fresh air around us.

The Chamber’s been navigating a tough spot after the City of Bishop decided to evict them from most of the A-Frame, a move that has purportedly been in the works for years, yet the formal eviction was given a few months ago. Robert admitted the communication with the city has been murky in recent years, though he’s optimistic about new leader Pam Foster. Despite the eviction, the Chamber’s allowed to stay temporarily while they transition, which Robert is extremely grateful for.

Question 1 – The Chamber recently bought a new building, now what?
They’ve purchased a new spot at 200 & 218 S. Main St., which may bring the Visitors Center and offices to the other end of town. This area is on the corner of Short and Main Streets, across from the Family Dollar. Robert shared plans to keep some existing tenants, while turning two units into Chamber space. The small white building on the corner might even become the new Visitors Center someday, though he’s keen to respect current renters and agreements. Any extra units will be leased out, generating revenue to help with the mortgage. He believes this location was one of the best options available to them given the circumstances.

Question 2 – Does the Chamber want to leave the A-Frame?
Not a chance. Robert called it a prime location and hinted at using both buildings if possible, keeping the Visitors Center there and moving offices south. This could free up funds for community perks like fish stocking and the climbers’ outreach program. For now, the A-Frame remains partially open, with a move by the City of Bishop expected in a few months. Robert also mentioned how many people in the community have offered to help with funds, resources, and time to keep the iconic A-Frame in its perfect spot. Will the City of Bishop decide to fix the A-Frame or tear it down like originally planned? The city is diligently gathering information to decide the A-Frame’s fate, with updates expected at future City Council meetings.

Question 3 – What does the future look like?
The Chamber’s not here for a fight, Robert stressed. Instead of wasting time and resources, they’ve invested in a new future, focusing on tourism and community growth. He wants to work with the City of Bishop for the betterment of our community and has future meetings planned. With a solid board and a commitment to collaboration, they’re in it for the long haul, aiming to strengthen Bishop’s economy and spirit.

Stay tuned, opportunities to support the move are coming, and the Chamber can’t wait to welcome everyone to their new home. For more details, check out their latest newsletter. This is a bittersweet shift, but one that promises to keep Bishop thriving.
