Mono County not included in second round of state restrictions, but we’re headed there.

(JULY 6, 2020): Earlier today, Governor Gavin Newsom asked six additional counties to cease indoor operations for restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos/museums, and cardrooms in response to surging positive cases and hospitalizations. While Mono County is not included in this second round of restrictions, local public health data is trending in the same direction, and should it continue, we may find ourselves on the official “watch list” shortly.

Mono County has experienced 8 new confirmed COVID-19 cases over the last few days, with no hospitalizations. Test results are pending on three other suspected positive cases. All cases are being investigated via contact tracing, testing, and quarantine or isolation of close contacts. Several cases have links to local restaurants, which are part of the investigations.

While none of the confirmed cases are currently known to be linked with one another, two of the suspected cases were identified through contact tracing efforts of known cases. All confirmed cases and two of the suspect cases are residents of the Mammoth Lakes and surrounding area region. The third suspect case is a visitor from another state.

Our new cases occur in the context of increasing spread in California and neighboring states. Rates of new COVID-19 cases and hospitalization are climbing at an alarming rate in many areas, as witnessed by the Governor’s recent actions to tighten down the opening of a number of California counties.

Our community has worked together to protect local public health, adapting and sacrificing for the greater good. Mono County and the Town of Mammoth Lakes urge residents and visitors to continue to heed Public Health protocols, including physical distancing, hand-washing, and wearing face coverings.

Residents and visitors are asked to stay home if exhibiting symptoms, and encouraged to call the 211 Mono Nurse Hotline for advice and a possible referral for testing.

As a reminder, local and state health directives require the use of a face covering in public spaces, and gatherings outside of household units are prohibited. The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting our community, and each of us needs to take personal responsibility to keep ourselves and others healthy and safe.
