Yosemite National Park officials have issued a safety advisory after geologists detected a significant new fracture forming along a granite cliff face in a popular area of the park. While rockfall is a natural and ongoing process in Yosemite’s rugged terrain, experts say the size and rapid development of this particular crack warrants heightened caution.

Park rangers have temporarily closed nearby trails and placed barriers to keep visitors at a safe distance while specialists monitor the formation. According to park staff, sensors and visual inspections indicate that a portion of the cliff could break away without warning.

Officials urge visitors to obey posted signs, stay clear of restricted zones, and remain aware of their surroundings. Rockfall events in Yosemite happen every year, but early detection and public cooperation are key to preventing injuries.

People want to explore and enjoy the park, but nature is constantly shifting here. Safety has to come first.

The park will continue evaluating the crack over the coming days and will reopen closed areas once it’s deemed safe.

The granite crack is located on the western side of the Royal Arches formation in Yosemite National Park, near the Super Slide climbing route. It is situated north of The Ahwahnee and is also adjacent to other climbing routes like Serenity Crack and Peruvian Flake West.
