Unattended BBQ Sparks Emergency Response at Bishop City Park

An unattended barbecue at Bishop City Park led to an unnecessary emergency response this tonight,  October 9, 2025, drawing both the Bishop Fire Department and Bishop Police Department to the scene.

A city park bbq was left behind with hot coals still burning. The smoldering embers prompted concern from parkgoers, who reported the potential fire hazard. Fire crews quickly extinguished the coals before they could spread.

Just a reminder to residents and visitors to never leave barbecues or fire pits unattended, even for a short time. Hot coals can remain active for hours and easily ignite surrounding dry grass or debris.

Incidents like this not only pose a fire danger but also tie up valuable emergency resources that could be needed elsewhere.

We urge everyone enjoying local parks to fully extinguish coals with water, ensure grills are cool to the touch, and properly dispose of ashes before leaving the area.
