Rep. Kiley Responds to Gov. Newsom’s Redistricting Press Conference

WASHINGTON – Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) issued the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting press conference this afternoon.

“Governor Newsom’s plan to push aside California’s independent Citizens Redistricting Commission is a dangerous attack on democracy. California voters have already settled this matter, voting that politicians should not draw district lines because it is an inherent conflict of interest. The Governor’s attempt to confuse voters into reversing their own decision and going back to the era of partisan redistricting will not succeed.”

“While Newsom’s scheme is especially undemocratic, redrawing district lines in the middle of the decade is unhealthy for representative government in general. I’ve introduced legislation to prohibit this practice and stop a damaging redistricting war from breaking out across the country.”
