Picnic With a Purpose: Come Together for Fun and Connection in the City Park on August 6!
Two local organizations, INYO350 and Friends of the Inyo, are once again organizing an all-ages “Picnic with a Purpose: Stronger Together,” an evening of fun, food, and music in the Bishop City Park on Wednesday, August 6. All are invited to attend and explore new ways to serve and safeguard our community and the planet at this family-friendly event.
“In contrast with the current administration’s focus on turning against compassion and sowing divisions, this event will be focused on coming together and building community. It will be an evening of food, music, and time to connect with neighbors, friends, and family,” says INYO350 Chair Harold McDonald. “We want to take this time to come together in solidarity to celebrate our amazing community and discover ways to take action for a better future for us all.”
Everyone who attends will receive free discount coupons to purchase dinner and treats from two popular local food truck favorites, Uncle Shyam’s and Doggies Original Hot Dogs. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Great music will be provided by Fiddlin’ Pete Watercott, whose shows feature a variety of original songs, traditional folk songs, and western classics, with some hot fiddle tunes thrown in to spice things up. Pete is an artist on the fiddle, guitar, and mandolin, and he will be joined by well-known local musician, Derik Olson.
The evening will also include brief remarks from state and local leaders on environmental and immigration concerns affecting the Eastern Sierra. Renna Hickey, the Sierra Nevada Regional Organizer with California Environmental Voters, will address public land assaults and other pressing topics. Bishop resident Virginia Figueroa will discuss issues affecting our local immigrant community. A variety of local organizations will be present and tabling to share practical actions local folks can take to benefit our area and the planet.
“It will be a great evening in our beautiful City Park, a time to be with neighbors and friends – and a rewarding chance to discover ways to help and benefit our community and shared future,” said Friends of the Inyo Executive Director Wendy Schneider. “There’s so much that can be accomplished when local folks come together for good causes.”
“Those with great power too often are looking out only for themselves; communities look out for each other,” notes Harold McDonald. “We are always stronger together. Join us on August 6 in community, celebration, and activation as we continue to fight for our humanity and each other.”
