FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Walker Bike Lane Project Begins Work Next Week

What you need to know: Work is set to begin on the Walker Bicyclist Safety Improvements Project on July 14. The project is restriping U.S. 395 through the town of Walker, adding bike lanes and changing the structure of the center-turn lane.

MONO COUNTY — The layout of U.S. 395 through the town of Walker is about to change. On Monday, July 14, Caltrans expects to start work on the Walker Bicyclist Safety Improvements Project on U.S. 395 from Eastside Lane to 0.5 mile north of Hackney Drive. This highway maintenance project will add bike lanes to both sides of the highway as well as convert the current continuous two-way left-turn lane running down the middle of the highway into a discontinuous two-way left-turn lane. A discontinuous center lane adds new striping where no driveways connect to U.S. 395, a visual deterrent for drivers attempting to use the lane for illegal passing.

VSS International Inc. out of Sacramento is the contractor on this $948,000 project. Construction is expected to last for 25 working days, and there will be one-way traffic control at the north end of the project area. Otherwise, drivers can anticipate lane shifts to accommodate the restriping and slurry seal work. Access to driveways along U.S. 395 will temporarily close when crews apply the slurry seal and drivers may experience 20-minute delays.

All business through Walker will remain accessible throughout construction.

Work schedules are subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment or materials, or any construction-related issues.
