Mono County Board of Supervisors Recognizes Deb Bush as 2024 Community Spirit Award Winner

MONO COUNTY, Calif. (JANUARY 21, 2025) – Last week, the Mono County Board of Supervisors presented Deb Bush with the 2024 Mono County Community Spirit Award. Ms. Bush was selected for this award by Supervisor John Peters, District 4 for her outstanding service to the community of Antelope Valley and Mono County.

“Ms. Bush demonstrates the true meaning of the Community Spirit Award,” said Supervisor John Peters, District 4. “Her dedication to making a difference is an inspiration to us all.”

As the owner of Walker General Store for over 37 years, Bush provides vital resources and support to the community, going above and beyond to assist residents with a wide range of needs. From helping community members find transportation and housing to assisting with snow removal for those that aren’t physically capable to do so themselves, her passion and commitment have illuminated the lives of all those she has touched. She also founded the “How Big is Big?” Fishing Derby, a popular event boosting local tourism and youth involvement.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to receive this award and I love my community with all my heart,” said Bush. “I couldn’t do any of this without my family. They are my inspiration. In fact, the biggest reason I do this is for my children, grandkids, and great-grandchildren. I want them to learn the value of community service and how important it is to get involved and make the world a better place.”

Bush has also been involved in a many local organizations throughout the Eastern Sierra including the Mono Arts Council, numerous Eastern Sierra Unified School District and Coleville High School volunteer groups (including coaching softball with her husband for many years), Antelope Valley Regional Planning Advisory Committee (RPAC), Northern Mono Chamber of Commerce, and Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Chapel.

In addition to her community service and volunteer work, Bush and the Walker General Store serve as an unofficial hub for disseminating critical information during emergencies, often working with Mono County Office of Emergency Management to support their external communications efforts during emergency response situations.

The Community Spirit Award was launched in 2021 by Supervisor Stacy Corless following her tenure as Chair. The award celebrates local individuals who took initiative to do something beneficial for their community in the most difficult times.
