CONSUMERS SHOULD BE ON THE ALERT WHEN BUYING FIREWOOD

Fall is here, and with winter just around the corner consumers should protect themselves from paying too much for improperly measured firewood. A cord is the only legal unit of measure for bulk firewood sales in California, and it is important for buyers to know exactly how much wood is in a cord.

A cord is equal to 128 cubic feet of COMPACTLY stacked wood, typically measuring 4’x4’x8’. To determine the cubic feet, multiply length x width x height. Measurements taken in inches can be converted to cubic feet by dividing by 1728.

For all sales of non-packaged wood, California regulations require the seller to furnish the buyer with a bill of sale, stating the amount of wood purchased, total selling price, the seller’s name and address, and the date of sale or delivery.

When buying wood over the telephone, make certain it is delivered by the cord measure and not a pickup load-full. Remember to pay only upon delivery.

Anyone suspicious about a firewood purchase should contact:

Inyo/Mono Counties’ Department of Weights and Measures

Bishop, CA 93514
Telephone: 760.873.7860
