This all-female quintet, first made waves in the burgeoning Los Angeles music scene in the late 1980s, back when the Palomino was ground zero for the post-cowpunk California country scene. When The Mustangs appeared at the famed Palomino club, they often shared the stage with artists such as Lucinda Williams, Rosie Flores and Jim Lauderdale. The Mustangs had an original roots, rockabilly and blues take on country and held their own. But after 7 years and 3 European tours, they called it quits.
Now having re-emerged as Mustangs Of The West, they’ve got a new Americana country sound and a record deal with 3 albums on Blue Elan Records/KZZ Music. Founding Mustang and lead guitarist Sherry Rayn Barnett reunited the group with lead vocalist/writer/acoustic guitarist Suzanna Spring and bassist/vocalist Holly Montgomery – inviting new members Aubrey Richmond (fiddle/mandolin/vocals) and Suzanne Morissette Cruz (drums/percussion/vocals) to complete the new lineup. Suzanna Spring’s original songs bring the heart and soul of the group together.
Their 1st album, TIME, released in March of 2020 on Blue Élan Records, was produced by the acclaimed Mark Howard (Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris). The album received great reviews and yielded an opportunity for follow up albums of all new material. 2023 marked the release of 2 new Mustangs Of The West CD’s, “Sea of Heartbreak”, and “Down At The Palomino” – which topped the Roots Radio Report charts for 18 weeks in a row in 2024!
The group has performed at SXSW in Austin as official artists, AmericanaFest in Nashville, and headlined at The Bankhead Theatre in Northern California. They returned to Nashville in May 2024 for live shows at 3rd and Lindsley, including “Finally Fridays”, broadcast on WMOT-FM (co-billed with Chris Smither). And now, Mustangs Of The West are returning to Southern California, for the first time since last year’s album release at The Roxy Theatre. Catch them at one of the five special upcoming shows!
