FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Camp Like a Pro in California’s Eastern Sierra

Follow Award-Winning Campaign for Camping Safety and Stewardship Tips and Tricks

MONO COUNTY, Calif. (JUNE 10, 2024) – As Summer approaches, Mono County, the Eastern Sierra Sustainable Recreation Partnership (ESSRP), and Mammoth Lakes Tourism (MLT) remind visitors and locals to Camp Like a Pro in the Eastern Sierra! Launched in 2021, the Camp Like a Pro campaign was established to provide information related to the education, stewardship, enforcement, mapping, and infrastructure around camping in Inyo and Mono Counties.

The award-winning Camp Like a Pro campaign includes a website with an interactive map (https://www.essrp.org/camping), as well as the Eastern Sierra Camping mobile app, available for both iPhone and Android users, which campers can utilize in the wild. This app allows users to download the map from the Camp Like a Pro website that shows where dispersed camping is allowed in areas you are visiting – and where it is not. Once downloaded, the map can be used with or without internet connection so you can wander wisely.

Camp Like a Pro partner MLT played a key role in funding the launch of the Camp Like a Pro app. As a continuation of their partnership, MLT is funding the production of the first video of the Camp Like a Pro series. The video series discusses important topics such as dispersed camping, wildlife food etiquette, and campfire safety. The first educational video in the Camp Like a Pro series was posted on the Visit Mammoth and Mono County Tourism Facebook pages over Memorial Day weekend, and the others are projected to go live in late June and early July.

Information from the campaign is rooted in the Leave No Trace principles in an effort to educate new campers – and to remind seasoned campers – how to enjoy their camping experience without negatively impacting the environment and the communities in the region. All campers are urged to employ the Camp Like a Pro principles to protect our Eastern Sierra public lands from fires, trash, and trampling. In addition, public lands users are encouraged to enjoy the beautiful Eastern Sierra from an established campground – there are more than 160 in Mono and Inyo Counties, and reservations can be made at www.recreation.gov or www.reserveamerica.com.

To download the free “Eastern Sierra Camping” mapping app, go to Google Play or the Apple App Store on your smartphone. For all information regarding how to Camp Like a Pro, please visit https://www.essrp.org/camping.
