With the July 4th weekend on the horizon, many travelers planning to go camping are still finding it hard to get information on which campgrounds are open, which are closed, and when will those still closed, be opened.
(From USFS) More campgrounds are opening in the Lee Vining Canyon, Rock Creek, Bishop Creek, and Whitney Portal areas.
The Whitney Portal Road opens tomorrow.
For now, Mt. Whitney Permits continue to be cancelled out one week in advance of the hiking date at this time. A permit is required to hike to Mt. Whitney (day and overnight use).
Virtual wilderness permits for other trailheads are being issued at all visitor centers and through the Wilderness Permit Office, daily from 8:00am to 4:30 pm, 760-873-2483. Call volume has been significant, so if you have a permit later in the year, we advise waiting to call until your reservation gets closer.

The biggest problem to reopening campgrounds appears to be staffing and the limitations imposed by social distancing requirements still in effect. Campgrounds can only be opened when enough staff is available to provide proper maintenance and oversight such as cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, and making any needed repairs that may be needed as the summer progresses.

Does anyone know when the campgrounds in Tioga Pass will open… Mainly Moraine or Aspen
you are asking the Government to use Common sense.
That will never happen.
In the meantime all of their paychecks are still coming in.
I have reservations 15th-19th. Now it’s closed? Is it because of the construction or Covid-19.
We have no idea. Suggest that you contact Inyo National Forest for an explanation. We’re mystified ourselves as to what is going on with their decision-making. It might become “open” by the time your reservation rolls around.

BISHOP CREEK CANYON CAMPGROUNDS
BitterBrush Campground and Big Trees Campground along with Forest Service restrooms will open Friday, June 12,2020.
North Lake Campground opens Friday, June 12, 2020, but will become a dry camp – NO WATER!!!
Four Jeffrey Pines is scheduled to open June 19, 2020.
Sabrina Campground is awaiting the results of a water test – Stay tuned.
Bishop Park, The Forks and Intake Two Campgrounds will not open do to water issues.
