MAMMOTH LAKES, CA (April 27, 2020) – Due to the timing uncertainty for the modification or lifting of the Governor’s unprecedented Stay At Home Order, along with the state’s subsequent mitigation measures for special events, the Town of Mammoth Lakes and the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Fourth of July festivities.
Cancelled July 4 festivities in the Mammoth Lakes area for 2020 currently include the Annual Mammoth Lakes Fourth of July Parade, Footloose Freedom Mile, POPS in the Park, Mono Arts Council: Mammoth Celebrates the Arts Festival, Mammoth Museum at Hayden Cabin Family Celebration, and the Fireworks Spectacular at Crowley Lake.
“This is a very serious situation and now, more than ever, we must be vigilant about following guidance and directives in order to flatten the curve and to decrease the strain on our local health care system.
Physical distancing and other mitigations must continue even after the Stay At Home Order is lifted. We are experiencing some respite, but we are clearly not out of the woods yet. You may say we have a bit of a cease fire, but the war is not over,” stated Dr. Boo.
“The Town of Mammoth Lakes would like to recognize and acknowledge the many long-standing partners, supporters and sponsors of the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at Crowley Lake,” stated Stuart Brown, Parks and Recreation Director. “Cancelling this generational event was an extremely difficult decision, but in our current environment of uncertainty, safety is our top priority.
Next year will be bigger and better thanks to the Crowley Lake Fish Camp, L.D.C., Mono County Community Services Area 1, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and Pyro Spectaculars by Souza.”
“While we know the Fourth of July, festivities are always a favorite for tens of thousands of our loyal Mammoth Lakes’ visitors, we appreciate the need to focus on health and safety,” said John Urdi, Mammoth Lakes Tourism Executive Director.
This decision does not come lightly to any of the partnering entities. These measures are being taken to ensure the health and well-being of all Mono County residents and our many loyal visitors. The Chamber of Commerce is aware of the fiscal impacts this will have on the business community and has already begun, in partnership with the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Lakes Tourism, working toward an alternative for the business community, locals, and visitors to celebrate our national holiday in a safe and responsible manner.

Cancelled,not only because of COVID-19 danger,but also fire danger.
We ALL know what fireworks shows usually turn into,especially in tourist towns where there’s a lot of large crowds partying and drinking,not only in town,but continuing into the night after the bars close down at 2 A.M.,either to packed rented condos built to house maybe 4 people,but usually many times more than that.
Or onto the campgrounds sure to be open by then,late night-early morning bonfires,fireworks going off until a camphost or Law Enforcement are called having to tell them no fireworks allowed on USFS land.
All the way around,it’s a powderkeg….literally….last thing they need up there now is a town packed with people,many already pissed off and saying they’re bringing all their supplies,food and goods needed and not going to be spending their money up here,add alcohol,weed and fireworks to that going off in the campgrounds,trees and dry brush,and a good possibility the COVID-19 dangers take a back seat to what could happen up there.
We have had plans to travel across the country to spend a week in Mammoth. I was looking forward to taking my family to let them experience mammoth for the first time and enjoy the 4th of July at the end of the week.
I am sad to say I will be canceling my reservations at the hotel and doing so will not be spending any money to help the tourism of Mammoth. The economy needs a boost. The American people need a break. We all can’t just stay inside for the rest of our lives.
Why cancel it so soon? If the governor opens Cali to a stage 3, you should have the celebration. That’s what it’s all about… getting back to normal.
Hopefully sometime, we will get to see Mammoth. Just not this year or probably for a few years. Now I need to decide what to do for the week of the 4th.
I wish your town the best. The economy is crashing hard and I hope this didn’t put any more business out. Your chamber of commerce needs to recognize how detrimental this could be to your town.

Check out the first 2 columns of this chart, and then realize that it doesn’t go through 5/1 but only through 4/25. Glad to see all these government funded activities cancelled. Happy to see a fiscally conservative approach to the holiday as tax revenues will be down for the year.

Mammoth should be gated off and closed to protect others from their panic which is much more dangerous than the liberal created virus scare. They should announce fall ski season closed as well while they are at it. Let freedom ring outside of the gates in Northern Mono county as it always has and re-open as much as possible now and try to have a good summer season and support local small business. Reject the outlandish liberal state and local “Great Suppression” of the economy and civil liberties. .
Hmmmm. Just remember that healthcare is not your civil liberty nor your constitutional right, thanks to the conservative tea-party, the hard-leaning right, the Republicans, and Trump. So, if you get sick, don’t piss and moan if your doctor decides not to see you or treat you.

Latest research indicates that anywhere from 25-50% of those with the virus are asymptomatic. So there are a lot of “sick” people who are unaware they’re carrying the virus. Simply telling those who know they’re sick to stay home is not a realistic way to stop the spread.
Actually, what I meant is sick or someone who is afraid – stay home. Let people that are healthy and not afraid to be able to enjoy our country.

Thing about that is,it would be a whole new ballgame if or when the throngs of SoCal visitors travel the extra miles to party in Bridgeport instead of Mammoth Lakes.
Not quite the same kind of town,especially on the three-day holiday weekends.
Law Enforcement VERY proactive in Bridgeport,and how the townspeople like it and want it to be.
Drinking and driving,a big no-no up there.So is speeding through town,rowdy drunken parties in the taverns,if they even have a tavern,that might carry out onto the streets after 2 A.M. might be frowned upon….by residents and Law Enforcement.
In Mammoth Lakes,the L.A. people and their money control things there….big city-type night life,rowdy late night-early morning crowds,etc…$325 a night 2 bedroom condos that rent out to groups of 8 or more people,using them as a week-end “crash-pad”.
My bet is,if the same crowds that “celebrate” July 4th in Mammoth go to Bridgeport this year to celebrate the holiday,the County jail and impound yard will be full capacity come Sunday morning.
Do you realize that we have 5 months to make money, to save up for the winter. Now, we have 3 months. And the 4th of July is our biggest event. We already lost 2 businesses to this “experiment” we don’t need the whole town to become Bodie. The Rona is not that deadly, look at the real numbers. The people who are afraid should stay home, and let the rest of us enjoy our liberty.
Honoring the requests of our federal, state and local public officials has nothing to do with being afraid. It has to do with showing some respect for your friends, your neighbors and the larger community that we all share.

I think we’re seeing the start of the “new norm”, some people talking that way like “Mono Person” and “Liberty” do with their posts.
They’re the “brave and healthy ones”,and for those that want and use caution,we’re the ones that should “stay home” and let them enjoy things,their “liberties” and the ” constitutional right “to go fishing….and to “party” on July 4th.
Sometimes still claiming the COVID-19 is some kind of hoax or some political “deep state” theory not to be believed.
Now,it’s gotten to where they believe money and the economy rules all and “trumps” everything else,never mind the safety issues.
My bet is,Bridgeport,since it’s also part of Mono County same as Mammoth,Bridgeport will soon follow suit and shut down their July 4th festival,for a lot of reasons.
Being July 4th falls on a Saturday this year,making it a three day week-end for many,if the Trout season is open by then,they’ll have plenty of visitors (and income) coming from that,without a bunch of July 4th revelers coming to their little town,some surely bringing L.A.-SoCal illegal fireworks to set off in the campgrounds and campsites,annoying others,surely bringing added work and patrol for Law Enforcement,not to mention the fire danger and fire rules many would ignore.
Somehow,I just don’t see Bridgeport and it’s residents and Law Enforcement dealing too well with a bunch of intoxicated visitors walking the town streets at 3 A.M.setting off cherry-bombs and rocket-bombs,then driving and speeding back to their rented condos in Mammoth to continue with their all-night party.
If some are so bent on a big fireworks extraviganza,I’m sure they’ll have a big one to enjoy closer to home,maybe like at the Santa Monica Pier or somewhere far south of here.
People! What is 99% effective against Covid? YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM!!!! The only people dying from this predominately are old frail, already immune compromised individuals. Not the healthy. Protect our elderly and the ones in the nursing homes by all means.
