Ask almost anyone that ever knew the late-Mammoth Mountain founder Dave McCoy, who died on February 8 at the age of 104, and they would tell you that he had a zest for life and felt that “fun” was an important part of his life.

McCoy himself would tell you that he believed that having fun had a lot to do with his success and longevity. You cannot argue with either. He was immensely successful…and he definitely lived a very long, full life.

The idea of fun seemed a great way to honor and celebrate his life. Providing a day of fun on the mountain is the best way to honor McCoy, say his family and friends. So, on Friday, Feb. 28^th, Mammoth Mountain will honor his memory with a day “focusing on fun.” Operating hours will be extended to 5 p.m., and free lift tickets will be offered beginning at 3 p.m. to anyone who doesn’t already have a ticket or an Ikon Ski and Snowboarding Pass.

There will also be free scenic gondola rides.

McCoy started his career as a young hydrographer working in the Sierra Nevada for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. It inspired a vision of what would eventually become his legacy, Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort.

Family and friends will speak at the Main Lodge at 5:15 p.m. about what McCoy meant to them and to the mountain he envisioned when he was a young man.

Visitors are being invited to share a memory or leave a note of thanks to McCoy on boards that will be located at The Village, Canyon Lodge, Main Lodge and McCoy Station.
