Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care’s veteran rescue volunteer, Kevin Calder, responded to a call last Sunday morning from a local resident.

Miranda Serene was concerned for a young Bobcat she spotted high atop a Round Valley freeway sign. Kevin’s goal was to ascertain if the animal was injured and needed help.

Bobcats hunt mostly at dawn and dusk. They are excellent climbers and will sometimes hunt by ambushing prey from a high place such as a boulder or snag.

This youngster may have under-estimated the sign’s height and was reluctant to jump down.

Attention directed at the feline climber by Miranda, the CHP, and others no doubt added to the cat’s unease. Kevin’s stop and examination of the scene proved to be one too many.

After a few restless moments, the bobcat made the 12-foot plus leap and vanished quickly into the brush.
