After a nationwide search and interest from highly qualified candidates from other parts of the country, the Board turned to a candidate who has first-hand knowledge of Mammoth’s recreation interests, obstacles, players and opportunities.  “Rich brings a passion and vision for enhancing our recreation experience that is contagious,” stated Danna Stroud, MLR Board President, “and we are very excited about having him lead MLR through our transition from formation to an operational organization.”

Rich Boccia has over 30 years’ experience in education, serving as a teacher, principal and administrator at all levels of the education system.  During over two and a half years as superintendent for Mammoth Unified School District he actively led the district through strategic goal setting and budget prioritization.  He most recently served as associate principal for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District, from which post he retires in June. He is a proven dealmaker and consensus builder.

In addition to his proven administrative and leadership skills, Rich has professional experience as an active gymnastics program director with the YMCA, the U.S. Gymnastics Federation and the U.S. Olympic Committee.  In his roles with these organizations, he developed effective communication and outreach plans that lead to effective participation in respective communities, relationship building and delivery of well-balanced programs.

“The role of MLR is simple, yet very important – to help Mammoth Lakes become a renowned recreation destination for enthusiasts of all interests and levels,” said Boccia, “and I’m thrilled with the opportunity to be its first executive director and to actively engage the community with MLR’s strategic efforts.”

Mammoth Lakes Recreation formed June 2, 2014 as a non-profit, public benefit corporation to identify and prioritize Mammoth Lakes recreation opportunities, including development, enhancement, programming, and promotion of recreation, arts and culture.  For more information visit www.mammothlakesrecreation.org.  Email inquiries to [email protected].
