UPDATE 9:30 PM
CalFire reporting the Round Fire at 500 acres.
###
A wind-whipped fire west of US Highway 395 has forced the evacuations of residents of Paradise and Swall Meadows and has burned one residence and one outbuilding.
The Round Fire began Friday at 2:07 p.m. according to CalFire, and at last report at 6:30 p.m. was 100 acres in size with zero percent containment. Winds were blowing through the Round Valley area at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts to at least 40 mph.
CalFire is reporting that “significant wind shifts make containment a challenge; too windy for fixed- or rotary-winged aircraft.”
Fifty personnel, 13 fire engines and two bulldozers were on scene, and this afternoon dozens of residents were waiting anxiously, hoping their homes would be spared from the flames.
The fire is located about 15 miles north of Bishop and about 25 miles south of Mammoth Lakes in Inyo and Mono counties along Sherwin Grade. No injuries have been reported.
Lower Rock Creek Road has been closed to all non-emergency vehicles.
An evacuation center has been established at the Crowley Lake Community Center: 458 S. Landing Rd, Crowley Lake.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Agencies on scene are CAL FIRE, Inyo USFS, Paradise Fire Dept., Inyo County Sheriff, Mono County Sheriff, CHP, LADWP, BISHOP Fire, Big Pine Fire, Independence Fire, Lone Pine Fire, Long Valley Fire, Wheeler Crest Fire, Edison and CDCR.
At last report, US 395 was closed from Lee Vining to the Nevada state line, due to a fire, downed trees and unsafe driving conditions.
Call 511 or 800-GAS-ROAD for the latest Caltrans road conditions.

It’s been over five months and the Cal Fire website still shows the cause of the Round Fire as under investigation. I really miss Benett, she would have been all over this.
i find it ironic that the local media tells us the cause of the fire is under investigation, while mickey jarvis announces on national news that the power lines arched and started the fire. coincidence? i dont think so. if there is one thing i have learned living in the owens valley all my life it is that in order for the good ol boy system to work, before all else, they have to get the story they want to be heard out before any facts are revealed
Sendings my thoughts and prayers to all those in Swall, Paradise, 40 Acres and the Round Valley community that your homes and families are safe!!!
I also want to send an ENORMOUS thank you to all of our firefighters and law enforcement for their responsiveness, dedication and hard work last night. We may live in a beautiful area, but it is truly the people who make this such a special community. Thank you to those who put themselves in danger to protect us.
Those are nice sentiments to send.
I’m sending money. http://www.gofundme.com/roundfirerelief
Dejavu of the Birch Fire from the year 2000. Frighteningly similar? Praying that all of you affected are not harmed, your homes are safe, and your loved ones & pets are accounted for.
