ASSEMBLYMAN TANGIPA CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE PASSAGE OF AB 1560 FOLLOWING GUILTY PLEA BY GOVERNOR NEWSOM’S FORMER CHIEF OF STAFF

Dana Williamson Pleads Guilty to Fraud, Tax, and False Statements Charges — and Her Attorney Admits She Could Return to Lobbying After Sentencing

Clovis, CA — Today, Dana Williamson, former Chief of Staff to Governor Gavin Newsom, pleaded guilty in federal court in Sacramento to three felony counts: conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud, subscribing to a false tax return, and making false statements to federal investigators.

As alarming as the conviction itself is what emerged in a post-hearing interview. When reporters asked whether Williamson would be permitted to return to work as a lobbyist or consultant after serving her sentence, her attorney answered: yes — and suggested those with concerns take the matter up with the Legislature.

Assemblyman David Tangipa (R-Fresno) is answering that challenge directly. AB 1560, authored by Assemblyman Tangipa, would close the loophole that currently allows individuals convicted of public corruption, fraud, and related offenses to re-enter California’s political and lobbying arena after serving their time. Under AB 1560, those convicted of crimes involving the abuse of public trust would be barred from registered lobbying in California.

“Today, Dana Williamson — the former top aide to the Governor of California — pleaded guilty to defrauding a public official, lying to federal investigators, and cheating on her taxes. And her attorney told the press she can come right back to lobbying when it’s all over. That is unacceptable. AB 1560 exists precisely for moments like this. When those entrusted with the highest levels of government power use that access to commit crimes, they must forfeit the privilege of operating in those halls ever again. If we allow corruption to go unchecked — if we let convicted insiders simply serve their time and return to influencing government — we guarantee a future where Sacramento answers to special interests, not the people. This bill is needed now more than ever, and I call on my colleagues to pass it without delay.”

— Assemblyman David Tangipa (R-Fresno), Author of AB 1560
