Inyo County 5th Grade College and Career Day

Inyo County’s 5th Grade College and Career Day returned to the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop on Friday, April 24, giving local students an early introduction to future college and career opportunities before their transition to middle school.

A total of 187 fifth-grade students from five school districts took part in the hands-on event, which was designed to spark curiosity and build early awareness around education and career pathways. Sponsored by the Inyo County Office of Education and Cerro Coso Community College, the annual field trip encouraged students to begin thinking about how today’s classroom habits can shape tomorrow’s opportunities.

Throughout the day, students explored a variety of career fields through interactive activities and demonstrations. Career stations featured graphic arts, visual art, law enforcement, veterinary science, archaeology and geology, high school counseling, and health care—giving students the chance to engage directly with professionals and learn by doing.

Students tried on tactical vests, practiced CPR skills, toured an ambulance, examined tools used in scientific fieldwork, created digital sketches using graphic arts software, visited a mock veterinary clinic, participated in art activities, and played games designed to help prepare them for the transition to middle school.

While college and career planning may feel far off for 10- and 11-year-olds, organizers say the journey begins earlier than many realize. Middle school is often when students begin developing the study habits, interests, and engagement that lay the foundation for future success in both education and the workforce.

By introducing students to a wide range of careers at an early age, College and Career Day helps young learners begin connecting what they do in school now with the opportunities they may pursue later.

Students also learned about educational pathways available close to home through Cerro Coso Community College. During the April 24 event, students were introduced to career training and academic programs offered at the college, as well as transfer opportunities to four-year universities after earning an associate degree. Program areas highlighted included kinesiology, administration of justice, studio arts, engineering, and liberal arts.

The success of College and Career Day was made possible through the support of dedicated staff, community professionals, and volunteers who brought each learning station to life. The Inyo County Office of Education and Cerro Coso Community College extend their appreciation to Naomi Hart-Johnson and C5 Studios (Art); Breana Hope and Sierra LifeFlight (Health Care); Will Centre and Bishop Union High School Advanced Graphic Arts students (Graphic Arts); Christie Nesbit and April Nafeh, along with BUHS Link Crew students (Counseling and Middle School Transition); Ashley Blythe-Haverstock and staff (USDA); Leticia Gonzales and Leslie O’Brien-McMaster of Cerro Coso Community College; Dr. Nikki Milici and Bishop Veterinary Hospital (Veterinary Science); and Chief Derr, Officer Burton, Officer Dummer, and dispatch personnel from the Bishop Police Department and Inyo County Sheriff’s Office (Law Enforcement).
