The Bishop Union High School track and field team turned in an outstanding performance in HDL dual competition this week, with both the boys and girls teams earning convincing victories over Boron and Desert.
The Bishop boys defeated Boron 87–25 and Desert 94–13, while the Bishop girls also had a strong showing, defeating Boron 89–21 and Desert 81–52.
The Bishop boys showcased depth and consistency, especially in the distance events. Junior standout Tyler Norcross (Jr) led the way, winning both the 1600 meters (5:49.5u) and 3200 meters (12:38.2u). Teammate Brandon Walters (So) finished right behind him in both races, giving Bishop key points.
In the 800 meters, Caleb Chytka (Fr) and Ezekiel Lundgren (So) secured the top two spots, continuing Bishop’s dominance in the distance events.
The sprint group also contributed important points, led by Carlos Sualez (Sr) and Oscar Henriquez (Fr), who consistently placed in scoring positions in both the 100 and 200 meters.
In the hurdles, Lucas Turner (So) took first place in the 300-meter hurdles (55.4u), adding another win for the Broncos.
Bishop’s relay teams were once again a strength. The 4×100 relay team of Brady Johnson (So), Carlos Sualez (Sr), Oscar Henriquez (Fr), and Angel Lopez (Jr) won in 47.9u. The 4×400 relay team of Kavin Freeman (Fr), Zavion Cokeley (So), Brandon Walters (So), and Norcross (Jr) also secured a victory in 4:52.4u.
In the field events, Bishop dominated the throws. Sualez led the way in the shot put (38’ 9.5”), while Hunter Dailey (So) finished second as he continues to recover from a triple jump injury suffered last week. Tavien Davis (Sr) won the discus (116’ 2”), while Timothy Crowder (Fr) and Soren Davis (Jr) added depth with additional scoring performances.
The Bishop girls team also delivered a strong overall performance against both Boron and Desert, with contributions across all event groups.
Freshman standout Charlotte Haverstock (Fr) led the sprint group, winning both the 100 meters and 200 meters. She was supported by strong finishes from Amaya Hays (Jr) and Ellie Solomon (Fr).
In the 400 meters, Ellie O’Neill (Fr) earned a first-place finish, while Clare Haverstock (Jr) added valuable points.
The hurdles were another highlight, as Embry Aguilera (So) won both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.
Bishop’s relay teams were also strong. The 4×100 relay team of Madyn Weller (Jr), Amaya Hays (Jr), Ellie Solomon (Fr), and Charlotte Haverstock (Fr) took first place, while the 4×400 relay team of Ruby Fisher (Sr), Embry Aguilera (So), Ellie O’Neill (Fr), and Clare Haverstock (Jr) also secured a win.
In the field events, Bishop showed depth in both throws and jumps. Mia Peek (Fr) performed well in the discus, while Isabela Alarcon (So) and Temperance Gruwell (Fr) contributed scoring marks. In the jumps, Madyn Weller (Jr) took first in both the long jump and triple jump.
The highlight of the meet came from Charlotte Haverstock, who broke the Bishop Union freshman girls’ shot put record.
Haverstock recorded a throw of 27 feet, 7 inches, surpassing the previous mark of 26 feet, 1¾ inches, which had stood since 2014. She improved the record by 1 foot, 5¼ inches, marking a major milestone early in her high school career.
