Caltrans Enhances Safety for Drivers and Cyclists in Mono County

MONO COUNTY— Caltrans recently completed two projects that provide safety improvements to a pair of highways in Mono County on U.S. 395 and State Route 120 E.

The $950,000 Walker Bicycle Safety Project, paid for with highway maintenance funds, added bike lanes on both sides of the highway through the town of Walker. The project also converted the continuous two-way left-turn lane, which runs down the middle of the highway, into a discontinuous two-way left-turn lane.

A discontinuous center lane with new striping was added where no driveways connect to U.S. 395, serving as a visual deterrent for drivers attempting to use the lane for illegal passing.

The $3.5 million State Route 120 Cold In-Place Recycle Project, also paid for with highway maintenance funds, rejuvenated 20 lane miles on State Route 120 E (Mono Mills Road). Crews applied a fog seal to the pavement to extend the roadway’s lifespan and improve the driving experience for travelers. The project also included new striping and roadway bicycle signage, which will enhance safety for both bicyclists and drivers.
