FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) to Reopen this Week from Winter Closure

MONO COUNTY — Caltrans will open State Route 108 (Sonora Pass) from its winter closure on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. after 5 weeks of snow removal operations. The highway was originally closed for the season on November 11, 2024. The reopening of Sonora Pass is a joint operation between the Sonora Junction maintenance team of Caltrans District 9 and the Long Barn maintenance team of Caltrans District 10. Sonora Junction crews encountered 8’-12’ of snow in some locations along the Mono County side of the operation.

Sonora Pass, at 9,624 feet of elevation, is the second highest point on the state highway system maintained by Caltrans. All motorists are urged to use caution while driving the Sierra Mountain pass routes and watch for icy road surfaces in the overnight and early morning hours as well as water on the highway from the seasonal runoff. Drivers should reduce their speed to travel safely through these areas.

Caltran’s top priority is ensuring the safety of the traveling public and our workers along with supporting the economic vitality of our local communities. We are pleased to reopen State Route 108 for the season without incident and to allow early public access for recreation activities along Sonora Pass.

With the summer travel season upon us, now is the best time to download the Quickmap app to your iOS or Android device. The app gives users the latest information on road conditions on the California State Highway System, including lane closures, road closures, and rest area availability. Before you hit the road this year, plan your trip with the Quickmap app or website at quickmap.dot.ca.gov. You can also call the Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623).
